Separating Fact from Fiction: Clarifying Misinformation and Claims in Garmsir District
Amu Television recently aired a report discussing the purported lack of recognition of the Afghani currency among the residents of Garmsir district in Helmand province. However, this report contains misleading information and misconceptions, which need to be addressed.
The report includes interviews with two shopkeepers and a local Taliban official, suggesting that some teenagers in Garmsir do not recognize the Afghani currency. However, it fails to provide evidence or interview individuals who genuinely lack recognition of the Afghani currency.
Contrary to the claims made in the report, journalists in Helmand province and residents from the area assert that the people do recognize Afghani currency. However, it is important to note that while the Afghani currency does hold value, in the local markets, people predominantly use Pakistani rupees for their transactions.
Additionally, the report inaccurately states that the Garmsir district has been under Taliban control for the past twenty years. This claim does not hold true. In fact, historical information reveals that the Taliban’s control over Garmsir district was disrupted during the period from 2007 to 2011. Foreign forces conducted extensive military operations during these years, successfully driving the Taliban out of the district.
During that time, a military base known as “Dwyer” was established in Garmsir district, becoming the largest military base in Helmand province after Camp Bastion. American forces occupied this base until the near-collapse of the Republic.
